On Nov. 9, 2009, Cub Run Library students collected coins as part of a microfinance project through KIVA . We then loaned twenty five dollars to Hannah in Ghana, Africa to help her develop a Food Market business. After Hannah repaid that loan, we reinvested twenty five dollars for seven additional entreprenaurs across our globe using KIVA (See screen shot below). Microfinance is a general term to describe financial services to low-income individuals or to those who do not have access to typical banking services. |
As a conclusion to this lesson on global sharing, students partnered and discovered more about our global community by using the app: GEO GUESSR. This is a new tool just released for iPhone and iPad. Our Cub Run students embarked on a journey that took them all over the world. We discovered the most desolate roads in Australia to the busy, bustling streets of New York City. Feel free to try out this amazing Google maps learning tool with your family.
